South Coast of Barbados: A Local Guide

When you land at the airport in Barbados you will be on the South Coast. The South Coast of Barbados is a lot busier than other parts of the island because there is so much to do. Since there is so much going on down here we are going to break it down, here we go:

Beaches:

Pebbles beach is probably one of the more popular beaches on the South Coast. It is located near the Hilton hotel and it is a beautiful white sandy beach with very clear, bright blue water. It is also quite busy here but you can also find a guy to rent umbrellas and chairs from. Then spend the rest of the day drinking beers from the bar at Cruising Club.

After Pebbles, you will reach Accra. Accra beach is probably located near one of the busiest stretches of the South Coast. It is right next to Quayside and Chefette. That means you can get food and drinks whenever you want. This beach has a few more waves which can be fun for body surfing.

There are a few more beaches dotted along the coast, and then you reach Silver Sands. This beach is not the best place to swim because of the choppy waters but it is a great place to kite surf!

Once you pass Silver Sands, the beaches from there to Crane beach are dangerous for swimming. On the way to Crane beach you will pass Bottom Bay which is an absolutely stunning bay. It has white sands and palm trees which makes you feel like you are somewhere else.

Crane beach is very popular because of the hotel on the cliff. The sea here is choppy but is fun for jumping through the waves and body surfing again. It is a small stretch of beach so if it is busy you will feel like people are a bit ‘in your space’. It’s definitely worth checking out even if it is just a stop off on your island tour. Activities:

There are so many water sports offered on this coast, you can surf at Freights Bay or Surfer’s Point and at some times of the year at Pebbles. If you want to try something a little more daring you can take kite surfing lessons at Silver Sands, or you can wind surf.

If those kind of sports aren’t your speed then head back down to Pebbles beach and rent a paddleboard or a kayak from Cruising Club. Carlisle Bay is known for its shipwrecks so go scuba diving or snorkeling and check it out.

Restaurants:

After you’ve worked up an appetite from surfing or snorkeling or just lying on the beach drinking beers you definitely need to grab some food. At Pebbles you can check out Cuz’s Fish Shack located in the car park by Pebbles beach, his specialty is fish sandwiches. If not then go down the road and grab some Barbadian fast food from Chefette, the rotis are great and so is the fried chicken!

On a Friday and Saturday night you must head down to Oistins fish fry. There are stalls set up here where you can get your food. Make sure you try some fried mahi mahi or flying fish with macaroni pie, a proper bajan meal.

There are some lovely restaurants to go to if you are looking for something a bit more romantic. Champers is probably one of my favourites on the South Coast. They are located at the end of Accra beach with a deck over the sea. The views are simply stunning whether you go at lunch or dinner.

Tapas is probably my second favourite on the South Coast. Tapas is located on the boardwalk a bit further North of Accra beach. It is basically right on the beach and again the views are stunning whether it’s lunch or dinner.

There are lots more hidden gems around the South Coast so go exploring and check it out! Check out some more reasons to love Barbados.
