After two weeks of activities in Johannesburg, it was time to check out Cape Town. Our trip was jam packed with activities from the time we landed. If you are like me and haven’t done any research then check out this budget travel guide! So this is how we spent 6 days travelling around Cape Town, South Africa.
6 Days in Cape Town, South Africa
Day 1
We landed around 8am and were blessed with beautiful weather. We had to get up Table Mountain today because it was so clear. So we picked up the car and headed to the waterfront first and hopped on the ferry to Robben Island. After learning so much from the Apartheid museum, it was time to learn more about Robben Island. This was a prison for political prisoners and it was where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 of 27 years. It was interesting hearing from our tour guide who was also a former prisoner on the island.
From Robben Island we grabbed some fast food for lunch and made our way to Table Mountain. We had the perfect view from the top, it was so clear you could see down to Robben Island. We walked around for a little while and made our way down as the sun was setting. It was a beautiful way to end our first day in Cape Town.
Day 2
Unfortunately the weather took a turn for the worse here. We took a drive along one of the coast roads and made our way to the Old Biscuit Mill for lunch. This was a beautiful market with so many choices for food and drinks. We tried some craft beers and I had the most delicious paella.
Day 3
The weather cleared and it was a gorgeous day! Our first stop was Boulder’s beach, I didn’t know what to expect here, I just knew we would see some adorable penguins. We took the free pathway and saw so many penguins with babies. They were very protective and so you don’t want to stick your fingers through the gate, you might just lose them!
From there we took a drive up Chapman’s Peak. We saw some of the most beautiful scenery on the most perfect day.
After our Chapman’s Peak drive we headed to Groot Constantia for some wine! This was my first wine tasting ever and my friend’s aunt, uncle and cousin joined us. We went into the tasting area and got to sample 5 different wines, it was good fun pretending like we knew what we were talking about. We then realized we also had a cellar tour, so we joined the next toured and learned a lot about the process of making wine. At the end of the cellar tour we were treated to another wine tasting which was another 5 wines. During the tasting they gave you a jug to spit the wine back out but who are we kidding? Everyone was happy after that cellar tour!
Day 4:
I was looking forward to this day, we were driving out to Franschhoek, South Africa’s wine country. On the program today was a wine tour, no surprise there. We opted to take the tram using the blue line. Our stops included Rickety Bridge, Grande Provence, Holden Manz and La Bri. At each stop you paid about 20 ZAR for a wine tasting depending on the location. You could also get food at each stop. Each place was roughly a one hour stop which gave us plenty of time to drink… I mean, taste the different wines.
Day 5
After our epic afternoon wine tasting and ending the night in the pub, the following morning was a bit rough. We skipped wine tasting today and opted for the car museum. This car museum was amazing there were beautiful old cars all the way up to some new ones.
Day 6
We rounded up our 6 days in Cape Town with a walk through Kristenbosch gardens. These gardens were stunning. I would love to go in spring when all the flowers are in bloom, since May wasn’t the best time for it.
After we took a drive up to Lion’s Head, we took in the amazing views of Cape Town and Table Mountain with its table cloth on. The look of the cloud covering Table Mountain was a unique view and was the icing on the cake. I wish I could’ve spent more than 6 days in Cape Town, it reminded me so much of home with its chill vibe. Looking for some awesome photo spots? Don’t forget to pin this post for later!
Great article! It sounds like you had a good trip. I would love to be there in the future.
I was wondering, is it cold to swim in the ocean there? Especially since penguins enjoy it so much 🙂
Cape Town has been on my travel wish list for so long! It looks beautiful, especially the view from Table Mountain! And that little penguin is so adorable! 😉
When I first looked at the photo of the cell on Robben Island I thought it was a youth hostel! The views from Table Top mountain are amazing, is it an easy walk up there? The Magellanic penguin is super cute, were there other types of penguins as well? Wine country is for my Dad, he is the wine expert!
We took the cable car up table mountain. It was only those little penguins there, so adorable!
What a great diversity of activities that this city offers! I’d love to do the Robben Island tour as well (it was quite interesting that your tour guide was a former prisoner there). Also the nature (Kristenbosch gardens and Table Mountain) looks awesome! Can’t wait to visit Cape Town!
Cape Town is so cool. Those Penguins are so cute. We’d make the trip just to see those adorable guys.
I havent made it to South Africa yet but it looks amazing. I really want to go either next winter or the winter after. I would love to see all the places you visited too 🙂
Sounds like you really packed a lot into six days! I think Robben Island is somewhere I would like to visit some day (along with Alcatraz). To see first hand, and learn, how prisoners were treated in old prisons is something that really interests me!
And on an unrelated note, that penguin is so cute!!!
Sounds like you had a great time in Cape Town – and great that you managed to get up Table Mountain. We we visited we couldn’t see the top because of the weather for the first three days and it only cleared up the morning we were leaving so we didn’t get the chance to go up 🙁
Loved the penguins at Boulders Beach to and the view of Hout Bay from Chapmans Peak is just incredible!
Sounds like it really was epic! I can’t wait to go to South Africa my self after looking into Nelson Mandelas life just recently. It’s horrible what they went through in Robben Island, yet what a man he became after that! How lucky were you to have a clear day for the views from Table Mountain and later on see it in a blanket of clouds! The penguin looks adorable, that’s one thing I didn’t know about!
Aah! that was really a cool 6 days tour to Cape town Stace.
Seems you really had a great time. Just wondering how
Mr. Nelson Mandela might have gone with those 18 years of imprisonment. But loved the article, keep posting such articles
Cheers 🙂
Oh wow this just makes me want to go to Cape Town so much more. Seeing the penguins must have been absolutely amazing! I bet flying a drone over Cape Town would be amazing because of the mixed scenery.
